Philosophy is not written to be binged. In fact, in letter 2 of the Moral Letters to Lucilius, Seneca counsels “You must linger among a limited number of master thinkers and digest their works, if you would derive ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind” .

Our letters offer a decadent screen-free way to explore stoic philosophy gradually, in a fun and engaging format.

In a word, ornate. We model our designs on 15th century illuminated manuscripts of the Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium.

Each of your letters will arrive on parchment or vellum paper, beautifully typeset in a traditional humanist script and accented by decorated initials (dropcaps) and other ornamental design elements.

Great philosophical works are not meant to be read just once. They’re meant to be read over and over again at different stages of life.

As Seneca wrote, “nothing hinders a cure so much as frequent change of medicine”. If you found meaning and guidance in your first reading of Seneca’s letters, you’ll find even more clarity in your second.

Absolutely! Our letters make a great, thoughtful gift for students, new graduates, retirees, and others who love to contemplate how to live meaningfully.

At the moment, our letters use a modified version of the 1916 translation by Dr. Richard Gummere of Haverford College, which we think does an excellent job of balancing old eloquence and precision-of-language with accessibility.

New memberships begin at the start of the calendar month following the month in which you joined.

For example, if you ordered on July 15th, letters would begin to reach you in early August.

Note: New memberships may take up to 10 business days to process (though it’s usually much quicker), so if you order towards the end of a calendar month, your first letter might take a little bit longer to arrive.

If you’re located outside of the US: The world’s postal services vary in speed and reliability, so when your first letter arrives will depend upon your local carrier, but expect it to take at least 1-2 weeks longer.

Since we mail weekly, once your letters begin, they should continue to arrive at a regular cadence.

You’ll receive translated letters from the Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium.
